Winterising your static caravan

During the summer months, it can be difficult to visualise and indeed want to prepare for the poor weather and cold conditions of the winter. However, winterising your static caravan in preparation for the cold weather is vital in order to ensure it is sufficiently protected against anything which may cause damage. Lack of preparation can lead to cracked pipes, damp, mould as well as other costly repair bills which will only be waiting when you return in the spring.

❄️Draining your Caravan❄️

An important first step for winterising your static caravan, draining your caravan means to remove all the water from its system – this must be done prior to vacation for the winter.

The first thing is to disconnect the water, this is done by turning off the stop cock (which is usually located under the caravan), all drain valves under the caravan should then be opened. All taps and the shower should be opened until they run dry to ensure all water has been removed from the pipes. The cistern should also be emptied by flushing the toilet until there is not remaining water. It is a good idea to pour anti-freeze into the cistern, toilet bowl and all the plugholes to prevent freezing and subsequent cracks.

❄️Gas and Electricity❄️

Gas should be disconnected from the mains or from gas canisters with the valves closed. Any gas canister should be stored in a secure, dry, and well-ventilated location. Electricity should be switched off at the mains.

❄️A Thorough Clear-out❄️

All food items should be removed from the fridge/freezer and cupboards to prevent the formation of mould, or from attracting insects.

❄️Remove All Personal Belongings❄️

Any sensitive electrical equipment

Clothes

Bedding

Towels

Mats/rugs

Cushions, blankets, and throws

Once all your personal belongings have been removed the caravan, it should be thoroughly cleaned from top to bottom – from the bathroom to the wardrobe, food cupboards, fridge/freezer (leaving the door propped open) and the oven.

❄️Damp & Mould Prevention❄️

Dampness can lead to the formation of mould, something which can cause damage, is bad for health and leaves an unpleasant odour. In order to prevent the spread of damp, all air vents should be left cleaned and not blocked – this is extremely important as a blocked air vent will not allow fresh air to circulate and can cause a build-up of condensation. Both the exterior and interior of the caravan should be thoroughly checked over for any cracks or damaged seals.

Dehumidifier crystals can be left around the static caravan to suck any moisture from the air when the caravan is not in use and a dehumidifier can be left running for a couple of days prior to vacation in particularly damp regions of the country.

❄️Check Up on Your Caravan❄️

It is advisable to check on your static caravan during the winter period at least a couple of times, especially following any episodes of severe weather. You could also ask someone closer to your caravan to check up on your behalf if you happen to live far away, or get in touch with the park directly.

❄️Call in The Professionals❄️

For a reasonable fee, a qualified gas engineer can drain off your caravan for the winter season and leave it all set-up for the next season. Paying a professional can take the stress and worry out of doing the job yourself.
